Star Wars - Imperial Star Galleon

Description

The Imperial Star Galleon is a ship from the Expanded Star Wars Universe. It originally appeared in the West End Games 1989  "Imperial Sourcebook" for the Star Wars Role Playing Game and has since appeared in numerous RPG books, video games, comics and other stories.

In the midst of the Galactic Empire's reign, the Imperial Navy had lost far too many transports to both pirates and the growing forces of the Rebellion. The Emperor commissioned the design of a heavily armored transport that could effectively defend itself during battle without the need of escort ships. Kuat Drive Yards, the producers of the intimidating Victory- and Imperial-class Star Destroyers, came up with the Star Galleon-class frigate, which was not only a spacious armored transport, but a small warship in its own right.

On a casual scan, the Galleon appeared as any other ponderous bulk freighter, but once attacked, it deployed powerful turbo lasers and concussion missile batteries along with the protection of advanced deflector screens. The hull is an armored shell reinforced to withstand incredible punishment even after the deflectors were breached. In the event of a boarding action, the inner decks were a maze of zig-zag corridors equipped with anti-intrusion systems, heavy blast doors and numerous defensive positions to help repel boarding assaults.

In the event that capture was inevitable, the ship had one last trick up its sleeve. The main hold was modular and could be jettisoned from the ship along with with its own hyperdrive unit. Once clear, the entire section would automatically jump to hyperspace and travel to a random destination. The hold would then transmit an encrypted homing beacon to notify Imperial personnel of its location. Despite being an Imperial design, KDY also sold modified versions of the Galleon to private and corporate concerns that required well defended transports.

By the way, I tried to give this model's texture, that Star Wars 3D animated "Clone Wars/Rebels" TV show appearance.

I'm not gonna whine, and say "This is better than the new (insert ship here) Disney made for their new entries instead!" But I do wonder why they didn't make use of something so established, story-friendly, harmless to the new canon, and ready 'off the shelf' for the taking.
